2022-11-21unpack-file: fix ancient leak in create_temp_file()Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason
Fix a leak that's been with us since 3407bb4940c (Add "unpack-file" helper that unpacks a sha1 blob into a tmpfile., 2005-04-18). See 00c8fd493af (cat-file: use streaming API to print blobs, 2012-03-07) for prior art which shows the same API pattern, i.e. free()-ing the result of read_object_file() after it's used. 2022-07-27test-lib: have the "check" mode for SANITIZE=leak consider leak logsÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason
As noted in previous on-list discussions[1] we have various tests that will falsely report being leak-free because we're missing the relevant exit code from LSAN as summarized below. We should fix those issues, but in the meantime and as an additional sanity check we can and should consider our own ASAN logs before reporting that a test is leak-free. Before this compiling with SANITIZE=leak and running: ./t6407-merge-binary.sh Will exit successfully, now we'll get an error and an informative message on: GIT_TEST_SANITIZE_LEAK_LOG=true ./t6407-merge-binary.sh Even better, as noted in the updated t/README we'll now error out when combined with the "check" mode: GIT_TEST_PASSING_SANITIZE_LEAK=check \ GIT_TEST_SANITIZE_LEAK_LOG=true \ ./t4058-diff-duplicates.sh Why do we miss these leaks? Because: * We have leaks inside "test_expect_failure" blocks, which by design will not distinguish a "normal" failure from an abort() or segfault. See [1] for a discussion of it shortcomings. * We have "git" invocations outside of "test_expect_success", e.g. setup code in the main body of the test, or in test helper functions that don't use &&-chaining. * Our tests will otherwise catch segfaults and abort(), but if we invoke a command that invokes another command it needs to ferry the exit code up to us. Notably a command that e.g. might invoke "git pack-objects" might itself exit with status 128 if that "pack-objects" segfaults or abort()'s. If the test invoking the parent command(s) is using "test_must_fail" we'll consider it an expected "ok" failure. * run-command.c doesn't (but probably should) ferry up such exit codes, so for e.g. "git push" tests where we expect a failure and an underlying "git" command fails we won't ferry up the segfault or abort exit code. * We have gitweb.perl and some other perl code ignoring return values from close(), i.e. ignoring exit codes from "git rev-parse" et al. * We have in-tree shellscripts like "git-merge-one-file.sh" invoking git commands, they'll usually return their own exit codes on "git" failure, rather then ferrying up segfault or abort() exit code. E.g. these invocations in git-merge-one-file.sh leak, but aren't reflected in the "git merge" exit code: src1=$(git unpack-file $2) src2=$(git unpack-file $3) That case would be easily "fixed" by adding a line like this after each assignment: test $? -ne 0 && exit $? But we'd then in e.g. "t6407-merge-binary.sh" run into write_tree_trivial() in "builtin/merge.c" calling die() instead of ferrying up the relevant exit code. Let's remove "TEST_PASSES_SANITIZE_LEAK=true" from tests we were falsely marking as leak-free. In the case of t6407-merge-binary.sh it was marked as leak-free in 9081a421a6d (checkout: fix "branch info" memory leaks, 2021-11-16). I'd previously removed other bad "TEST_PASSES_SANITIZE_LEAK=true" opt-ins in the series merged in ea05fd5fbf7 (Merge branch 'ab/keep-git-exit-codes-in-tests', 2022-03-16). As in the preceding commit change a similar fragile test pattern introduced in b798671fa93 (merge-recursive: do not rudely die on binary merge, 2007-08-14) to use a "test_must_fail" instead. Before this we wouldn't distinguish normal "git merge" failures from segfaults or abort(). Unlike the preceding commit we didn't end up hiding any SANITIZE=leak failures in this case, but let's correspondingly change these anyway. 2021-12-13tests: fix broken &&-chains in compound statementsEric Sunshine
The top-level &&-chain checker built into t/test-lib.sh causes tests to magically exit with code 117 if the &&-chain is broken. However, it has the shortcoming that the magic does not work within `{...}` groups, `(...)` subshells, `$(...)` substitutions, or within bodies of compound statements, such as `if`, `for`, `while`, `case`, etc. `chainlint.sed` partly fills in the gap by catching broken &&-chains in `(...)` subshells, but bugs can still lurk behind broken &&-chains in the other cases. Fix broken &&-chains in compound statements in order to reduce the number of possible lurking bugs. 2021-11-18checkout: fix "branch info" memory leaksÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason
The "checkout" command is one of the main sources of leaks in the test suite, let's fix the common ones by not leaking from the "struct branch_info". Doing this is rather straightforward, albeit verbose, we need to xstrdup() constant strings going into the struct, and free() the ones we clobber as we go along. This also means that we can delete previous partial leak fixes in this area, i.e. the "path_to_free" accounting added by 96ec7b1e708 (Convert resolve_ref+xstrdup to new resolve_refdup function, 2011-12-13). There was some discussion about whether "we should retain the "const char *" here and cast at free() time, or have it be a "char *". Since this is not a public API with any sort of API boundary let's use "char *", as is already being done for the "refname" member of the same struct. The tests to mark as passing were found with: rm .prove; GIT_SKIP_TESTS=t0027 prove -j8 --state=save t[0-9]*.sh :: --immediate # apply & compile this change prove -j8 --state=failed :: --immediate I.e. the ones that were newly passing when the --state=failed command was run. 2020-11-19tests: mark tests relying on the current default for `init.defaultBranch`Johannes Schindelin
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default. To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to force-set the default branch name to `master` in - all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`, - t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to initialize the default branch, - t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`, - t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also uses `master`) This trick was performed by this command: $ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\ GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\ export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\ ' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \ t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not actually refer to the current default branch. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the default branch. 2020-08-10Collect merge-related tests to t64xxElijah Newren
The tests for the merge machinery are spread over several places. Collect them into t64xx for simplicity. Some notes: t60[234]*.sh: Merge tests started in t602*, overgrew bisect and remote tracking tests in t6030, t6040, and t6041, and nearly overtook replace tests in t6050. This made picking out relevant tests that I wanted to run in a tighter loop slightly more annoying for years. t303*.sh: These started out as tests for the 'merge-recursive' toplevel command, but did not restrict to that and had lots of overlap with the underlying merge machinery. t7405, t7613: submodule-specific merge logic started out in submodule.c but was moved to merge-recursive.c in commit 18cfc08866 ("submodule.c: move submodule merging to merge-recursive.c", 2018-05-15). Since these tests are about the logic found in the merge machinery, moving these tests to be with the merge tests makes sense. t7607, t7609: Having tests spread all over the place makes it more likely that additional tests related to a certain piece of logic grow in all those other places. Much like t303*.sh, these two tests were about the underlying merge machinery rather than outer levels. Tests that were NOT moved: t76[01]*.sh: Other than the four tests mentioned above, the remaining tests in t76[01]*.sh are related to non-recursive merge strategies, parameter parsing, and other stuff associated with the highlevel builtin/merge.c rather than the recursive merge machinery. t3[45]*.sh: The rebase testcases in t34*.sh also test the merge logic pretty heavily; sometimes changes I make only trigger failures in the rebase tests. The rebase tests are already nicely coupled together, though, and I didn't want to mess that up. Similar comments apply for the cherry-pick tests in t35*.sh.
