We `cat` files, but don't inspect or grab the contents in any way. These
`cat` calls look like remnants from a debug session, so it's tempting to
get rid of them. But they do actually verify that the files exist, which
might not necessarily be the case for some failure modes of `git apply
--reject`. Let's not lose that.
Convert the `cat` calls to use `test_path_is_file` instead. This is of
course still a minor change since we no longer verify that the files can
be opened for reading, but that is not something we usually worry about.

We can use test_must_fail and test_path_* to avoid some
hand-rolled if statements. This makes the code shorter, and
makes it more obvious when we are breaking the &&-chain.

Begin teaching the three-way merge fallback logic "git am -3" uses
to the underlying "git apply". It only implements the command line
parsing part, and does not do anything interesting yet, other than
making sure that "--reject" and "--3way" are not given together, and
making "--3way" imply "--index".

As a general principle, we should not use "git diff" to validate the
results of what git command that is being tested has done. We would not
know if we are testing the command in question, or locating a bug in the
cute hack of "git diff --no-index".
Rather use test_cmp for that purpose.

Now that "git diff" handles stdin and relative paths outside the
working tree correctly, we can convert all instances of "diff -u"
to "git diff".
This commit is really the result of
$ perl -pi.bak -e 's/diff -u/git diff/' $(git grep -l "diff -u" t/)

With the new flag "--reject", hunks that do not apply are sent to
the standard output, and the usable hunks are applied. The command
itself exits with non-zero status when this happens, so that the
user or wrapper can take notice and sort the remaining mess out.
