When converting all grafts in a graft file to replace refs, and one of them happens to leave the original commit's parents unchanged, we do not want to error out. Instead, we would like to issue a warning. Prepare the create_graft() function for such a use case by adding a `gentle` parameter. If set, we do not return an error when the replace ref is unchanged, but a mere warning. This is yet another patch to be filed under the keyword "libification". There is one subtle change in behavior here, where a `git log` that has been asked to show the mergetags would now stop reporting the mergetags upon the first failure, whereas previously, it would have continued to the next mergetag, if any. In practice, that change should not matter, as it is 1) uncommon to perform octopus merges using multiple tags as merge heads, and 2) when the user asks to be shown those tags, they really should be there. Remove the unused wildopts placeholder struct from being passed to all wildmatch() invocations, or rather remove all the boilerplate NULL parameters. This parameter was added back in commit 9b3497cab9 ("wildmatch: rename constants and update prototype", 2013-01-01) as a placeholder for future use. Over 4 years later nothing has made use of it, let's just remove it. It can be added in the future if we find some reason to start using such a parameter. Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die, lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take struct object_id arguments. Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *, leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface. parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch. 2017-03-30avoid using fixed PATH_MAX buffers for refsJeff King
Many functions which handle refs use a PATH_MAX-sized buffer to do so. This is mostly reasonable as we have to write loose refs into the filesystem, and at least on Linux the 4K PATH_MAX is big enough that nobody would care. But: 1. The static PATH_MAX is not always the filesystem limit. 2. On other platforms, PATH_MAX may be much smaller. 3. As we move to alternate ref storage, we won't be bound by filesystem limits. Let's convert these to heap buffers so we don't have to worry about truncation or size limits. We may want to eventually constrain ref lengths for sanity and to prevent malicious names, but we should do so consistently across all platforms, and in a central place (like the ref code). 2017-02-21delete_ref: accept a reflog message argumentKyle Meyer
When the current branch is renamed with 'git branch -m/-M' or deleted with 'git update-ref -m<msg> -d', the event is recorded in HEAD's log with an empty message. In preparation for adding a more meaningful message to HEAD's log in these cases, update delete_ref() to take a message argument and pass it along to ref_transaction_delete(). Modify all callers to pass NULL for the new message argument; no change in behavior is intended. Note that this is relevant for HEAD's log but not for the deleted ref's log, which is currently deleted along with the ref. Even if it were not, an entry for the deletion wouldn't be present in the deleted ref's log. files_transaction_commit() writes to the log if REF_NEEDS_COMMIT or REF_LOG_ONLY are set, but lock_ref_for_update() doesn't set REF_NEEDS_COMMIT for the deleted ref because REF_DELETING is set. In contrast, the update for HEAD has REF_LOG_ONLY set by split_head_update(), resulting in the deletion being logged. It can be useful to have grafts or replace refs for specific use-cases while keeping the default "view" of the repository pristine (or with a different set of grafts/replace refs). It is possible to use a different graft file with GIT_GRAFT_FILE, but while replace refs are more powerful, they don't have an equivalent override. 2015-05-25each_ref_fn: change to take an object_id parameterMichael Haggerty
Change typedef each_ref_fn to take a "const struct object_id *oid" parameter instead of "const unsigned char *sha1". To aid this transition, implement an adapter that can be used to wrap old-style functions matching the old typedef, which is now called "each_ref_sha1_fn"), and make such functions callable via the new interface. This requires the old function and its cb_data to be wrapped in a "struct each_ref_fn_sha1_adapter", and that object to be used as the cb_data for an adapter function, each_ref_fn_adapter(). This is an enormous diff, but most of it consists of simple, mechanical changes to the sites that call any of the "for_each_ref" family of functions. Subsequent to this change, the call sites can be rewritten one by one to use the new interface. Most struct child_process variables are cleared using memset first after declaration. Provide a macro, CHILD_PROCESS_INIT, that can be used to initialize them statically instead. When using --graft, with a mergetag in the original commit, we should check that the commit pointed to by the mergetag is still a parent of then new commit we create, otherwise the mergetag could be misleading. If the commit pointed to by the mergetag is no more a parent of the new commit, we could remove the mergetag, but in this case there is a good chance that the title or other elements of the commit might also be misleading. The usage string for this option is: git replace [-f] --graft <commit> [<parent>...] First we create a new commit that is the same as <commit> except that its parents are [<parents>...] Then we create a replace ref that replace <commit> with the commit we just created.
