2017-07-17doc: camelCase the i18n config variables to improve readabilityKaartic Sivaraam
The i18n config variable used weren't readable as they were in the crude form of how git stores/uses it's config variables. Improve it's readability by replacing them with camelCased versions of config variables as it doesn't have any impact on it's usage. 2015-07-01Documentation/i18n.txt: clarify character encoding supportKarsten Blees
As a "distributed" VCS, git should better define the encodings of its core textual data structures, in particular those that are part of the network protocol. That git is encoding agnostic is only really true for blob objects. E.g. the 'non-NUL bytes' requirement of tree and commit objects excludes UTF-16/32, and the special meaning of '/' in the index file as well as space and linefeed in commit objects eliminates EBCDIC and other non-ASCII encodings. Git expects bytes < 0x80 to be pure ASCII, thus CJK encodings that partly overlap with the ASCII range are problematic as well. E.g. fmt_ident() removes trailing 0x5C from user names on the assumption that it is ASCII '\'. However, there are over 200 GBK double byte codes that end in 0x5C. UTF-8 as default encoding on Linux and respective path translations in the Mac and Windows versions have established UTF-8 NFC as de-facto standard for path names. Update the documentation in i18n.txt to reflect the current status-quo. Signed-off-by: Karsten Blees <blees@dcon.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2010-01-10Documentation: spell 'git cmd' without dash throughoutThomas Rast
The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax: both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist. The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands., 2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants. Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell, git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the $PATH.

2008-10-21builtin-blame: Reencode commit messages according to git-log rules.Alexander Gavrilov
Currently git-blame outputs text from the commit messages (e.g. the author name and the summary string) as-is, without even providing any information about the encoding used for the data. It makes interpreting the data in multilingual environment very difficult. This commit changes the blame implementation to recode the messages using the rules used by other commands like git-log. Namely, the target encoding can be specified through the i18n.commitEncoding or i18n.logOutputEncoding options, or directly on the command line using the --encoding parameter. Converting the encoding before output seems to be more friendly to the porcelain tools than simply providing the value of the encoding header, and does not require changing the output format. If anybody needs the old behavior, it is possible to achieve it by specifying --encoding=none. 2008-07-05manpages: italicize git command names (which were in teletype font)Jonathan Nieder
The names of git commands are not meant to be entered at the commandline; they are just names. So we render them in italics, as is usual for command names in manpages. Using doit () { perl -e 'for (<>) { s/\`(git-[^\`.]*)\`/'\''\1'\''/g; print }' } for i in git*.txt config.txt diff*.txt blame*.txt fetch*.txt i18n.txt \ merge*.txt pretty*.txt pull*.txt rev*.txt urls*.txt do doit <"$i" >"$i+" && mv "$i+" "$i" done git diff .
